How to Clean Flux in PCB Racks: Effective Methods and Results

The flux cleaning on electronic boards, frames and soldering parts is an essential task to ensure the performance and durability of the devices.

This process removes solder and flux residues that can cause corrosion or short circuits over time.

Flux cleaning is not a simple matter and the most suitable flux cleaner and method must be used.

In this article, we show you how to approach this task using parts cleaning machines and specialised products, and we share results from real evidence made on racks of contaminated electronic boards.

How to Clean Flux

What is flux and why is it important to clean it?

Flux is a chemical compound used during the soldering process to improve tin adhesion and prevent oxidation of metal surfaces.

However, after welding, the flux residues can compromise circuit performance by attracting moisture and particles, which can lead to electronic failure.

That is why, flux cleaning is crucial in industries such as automotive, consumer electronics and aerospace, where circuit board reliability is a priority.

Methods for cleaning flux from electronic board racks

Manual cleaning with flux cleaners

Using a specialised chemical, such as a flux cleaner, is an effective solution to remove surface residues.

It is applied directly to the contaminated areas with a brush or cloth, followed by adequate rinsing.

PROBLEMLabour-intensive and time-consuming to clean. In addition, Flux residues that have been dry for a long time are difficult to remove.

Ultrasonic flux cleaning

Ultrasonic cleaning is ideal for reaching intricate areas on frames and plates.

This technique uses high frequency waves and a flux cleaner in aqueous solution to uniformly detach particles.

PROBLEM: Despite the fact that in IBERKLEEN we are lovers of ultrasonic cleaning machinesIn this case, as the flux is a very dense and sticky residue on the part, this method is not as effective as the following method.

Automatic rotary parts washers

This is the ideal and most efficient method to clean flux.

It allows the process to be automated, is achieved in very short times and ensures homogeneous cleaning, minimising the risk of cross-contamination.

The key is to use the right flux cleaner in combination with the machine.

ADVANTAGESYou automate the cleaning process and can assign the workers who used to do the manual cleaning to other tasks and minimise the risks of environmental impact on the work environment and workers.

Actual tests: Results on racks of flux-contaminated electronic boards

To illustrate the effectiveness of the methods described above, we tested electronic board racks heavily contaminated with flux residues by ultrasonic cleaning and spray cleaning in the SIRIUS 800 rotary washer.

The optimal results we obtained them on the SIRIUS 800 rotary washing machine. in just 10 minutes (using the appropriate flux cleaner with the washing machine)

Test method:

  • An ultrasonic cleaning machine was used with a specific cleaning solution for flux.
  • As the results were not perfect (see photos above), a rotary parts washer was used.
  • The cleaning cycle was set at 60°C for 10 minutes.

Results:

  1. Initial status: Racks with a visible layer and large encrustations of flux residues.
  2. Post-cleaning by spraying: After the process, the racks showed completely residue-free surfaces, even in hard-to-reach areas.

Conclusion

Clean flux correctly is essential to ensure the quality of your electronic boards.

In addition to using the most suitable parts washer, the results depend to a large extent on the combination with the right flux cleaner, which we offer at IBERKLEEN.

Tests have shown that a well-executed cleaning process ensures flawless surfaces, reliable electrical connections and enormous time and cost savings.
